Food is a Human Right, Not a Privilege!

Every year, on the 10 December, the world comes together to commemorate Human Rights Day. For us at the Social Gastronomy Movement, it is a day to remind everyone that food is a right and not a privilege!

On this day, we echo that everyone, regardless of race, nationality, religion, ethnicity, gender, or any other status is entitled to food; adequate and nutritious food all year round.

It is not a privilege that should be enjoyed only by certain groups of people in society but a right to be realized and enjoyed by everyone.

Food is the foundation of life, one of the most basic needs and rights required for human survival. Yet, currently, about 828 million people around the world are denied this right.

The main factors contributing to food security worldwide include climate emergencies, conflict, and economic shocks combined with growing inequalities.

At the rate that we are moving, food insecurity and hunger will continue to take an upward trend if we do not take action now.

In the same world, roughly a third of global food production goes to waste yearly, enough to feed twice the number of food-insecure people. Not only is wasting food very unfair to the people that go to bed hungry, but also to the planet as it is a misuse of resources such as land, water, and energy.

We cannot celebrate human rights when some people do not realize one of their most basic human rights, the right to food.
